A 16-year state legislature veteran up for re-election and a congressional Third District hopeful will speak at the Aiken County Democratic Party meeting on Monday.
Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter and Jane Dyer will both address the group at the Democratic Party's monthly meeting, said Jerrold Sundt, a party spokesman. The meeting will be held in the conference room of the Aiken County Council Building at 7 p.m.
Sundt said the majority of the meeting will center around upcoming elections. "We're pushing hard for volunteers; we need them to work with us for the campaigns," he said.
Elected in January 1992, Cobb-Hunter is a representative of the 66th District in Orangeburg. She has served as a Democratic caucus leader since 1997. Cobb-Hunter received her bachelor's degree in Afro-American history from Florida A&M University and her master's degree in American history from Florida State University. Cobb-Hunter also serves on the Democratic National Committee and will attend the national convention this month, where she will serve as a superdelegate. Cobb-Hunter is executive director of CASA/Family Systems, a family violence agency that serves Orangeburg, Bamburg and Calhoun counties. She recently went to Taiwan as part of a team to help oversee elections.
A pilot for the Air Force for seven years and a pilot for FedEx for 20 years, Dyer is looking to unseat U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, R-S.C. She received her degree from Clemson in mechanical engineering and was the first female from the university to attend Air Force pilot training. Dyer's platform, which looks to "(restore) faith in government," includes plans for making health care more affordable for Americans, seeking job security through alternative energy sources and creating more employment opportunities for South Carolinians.
