Three women claiming to be the family of an Aiken man who died in a crash late Sunday were arrested Monday after the women assaulted another woman, claiming she was in the vehicle that ran 21-year-old Andre Garrett off the road, causing him to die, according to police reports.

Shemeer Garrett, 26, of Hampton Alley, is charged with simple assault and battery and reckless driving.

Channel Garrett, 24, of Chime Bell Church Road, is charged with simple assault and battery.

Pricilla Johnson, 20, of Roses Run, is charged with simple assault and battery.

Around 3:45 p.m. Monday, the victim, a 20-year-old Aiken woman, was driving near the intersection of South Boundary and East Boundary avenues when a black Ford F-150 passed and cut in front of her, she told police.

The woman said she slammed on her brakes, and the three women got out and began to attack her. She said they approached her car and began hitting and punching her.

A witness told police she spotted the women begin attacking the lone woman while she was still in her car and said she got out of her vehicle to try to help the victim.

When police arrived, the accused assailants claimed the victim was in the car that "ran the vehicle that their brother was in off the road," saying that was the reason he died.

Andre Garrett was passenger in a late model Chevrolet that was headed north on Monetta Street about 10:35 p.m. Sunday. That vehicle, driven by Brandon Curry of Jehossee Drive, ran off the road onto the right shoulder and crashed into a tree, overturning and ejecting the 21-year-old man. He died from multiple body trauma sustained from the crash, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Officials said a melee broke out at the crash site, and authorities had trouble with the investigation.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office and Aiken Public Safety assisted while the S.C. Highway Patrol and the Coroner's Office conducted the investigation.

Curry was transported to a local hospital; however, he was later taken to the Aiken County detention center and charged with assault and battery on a first responder.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash, and it is unclear if there were any other vehicles involved in the crash other than the Chevrolet in which the two young men were riding.

hopefully the cops can get to the bottom of this :  7/17/2008

i do not know what to say. i feel the police should do more investigating and dig deeper to find out what exactly happened. i feel questions that should be asked by the officers are: why were you driving so fast, what caused you to run off the road, if he was already hanging out the window and had not flew out the whole time why all of a sudden...what type of impact caused him to fly out before you hit the tree. they need to check the tire marks in the road and see if they match his, see if theres any paint on the back of his car if indeed someone hit him and caused the impact for him fly out. if i were the sisters and girlfriend in this situation...i would have done the same thing to the girl if she did have something to do with it. if so the charges on her would be: leaving the scene of an accident, withholding information, vehicular homicide, wreckless driving, endangerment to society. and to put the blame on someone else is riduculous, its already bad enough that he had to watch his best friend die right before his eyes. why is his pict even up top. i see why his family did what they did. justice needs to be served! i would have done the same thing if it were my brother or boyfriend b/c now his daughter has to grow up without her father and then find out the horrible truth of how he passed away when she was only a month and half old. i send my condolences to the family and his fellow peers.

Why :  7/16/2008

The story doesnt have to make sense because the action doesnt make sense. No one knows when their time is coming. My condolences go out to the family of this young man - now they not only have to deal with the unexpected expenses of his funeral, but lawyer fees as well. And what a mess it will be if that woman decides to sue...can you say vicious circle? Plan not thought out...I hope the slaps, kicks and/or punches they got out of it were worth it...

Misleading Info :  7/16/2008

I am one of the few people that knows the actual truth about the accident that took Dre's life. The reporter that wrote this story should get her facts straight because Brandon had nothing to do with the girl getting beat up, so why is his picture in with everyone elses? Brandon was arrested for something different that didn't even have to do with the accident. And as for the girl that got beat up, she got what she deserved! She took the life of a man who had a newborn baby girl!

Sad circumstances :  7/16/2008

I personally knew the victim and am still in disbelief. I hope that (God forbid) if I was in the same situation as those girls that I would be more wise in handling my grief but it's hard to say for sure. Sometimes anger and grief clouds our way of thinking and all we can think of is revenge. I am not saying that this girls are justified in what they did but consider the circumstances. One of the girls was his girlfriend and the mother of his newborn daughter. I pray that God gives the family strength to endure and a special blessing for the young daughter who will never know her father. Rest in peace Dre

No Ones Fault :  7/16/2008

I know these people and this young man as well. Honestly I dont think they should have attacked this woman. Whether she was apart of the accident or not they were wrong because fighting doesnt solve anything. This was not going to bring this man back and the young woman was already going through things on her end witnessing the accident firsthand. No one is responsible for the death of this man because god had this in his plans obviously. If he would not been hanging out of the window and had a seatbelt on, he would have had a good chance in living. So its not this young woman's fault and im glad these people had charges brought against them.

How would you feel if it was your family member? :  7/16/2008

I am sorry, but if it were my family member and she was the cause she would have gotten hurt too. The lady if she is guilty of causing the accident should have charges pressed. A young man lost his life.

I agree. I can't follow the story at all. What a mess.

This is horribly written. Its sad what qualifies as good these days. In such an expanding world, one would think the middle class would be smarter.
