An 83-year-old Augusta woman was left dead after a single-car crash this weekend.
Lillian P. Gilchrist of 2110 Providence Drive in Augusta, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Medical College of Georgia Saturday, after her car hit a metal guard rail near Jefferson Davis Highway in North Augusta.
According to Aiken County coroner Tim Carlton, Gilchrist lost control of her 2005 KIA Sedona as she traveled near the 5000 block of Jefferson Davis Highway and crossed both lanes of the road before her vehicle struck the metal guardrail where the vehicle came to rest. The crash happened around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday. Gilchrist was alone in the car. According to Carlton, she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
According to an autopsy conducted in Newberry on Sunday morning, Gilchrist died of a broken neck from the impact of the collision.
Evidence found at the scene of the crash has caused officials to believe Gilchrist may have suffered an unknown medical event while driving, which led to the accident.
Her death is the 15th fatality in Aiken County this year.
The North Augusta Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.
