GVW names chosen for vote

Horse Creek, Gregg Township, GVW Tri-City and Gregg Valley will be the voters' choices as names for the proposed incorporation of the towns of Graniteville, Vaucluse and Warrenville.

GVW commissioners Alice Kirkland, Gordon Leopard Jr. and Vicki McCarthy unanimously approved the four names Monday, which will be added to the ballot for the upcoming referendum.

Kirkland, the commissioner's chair, said the four names were chosen out of the 20 submissions sent to the group since their last meeting, and some of the submissions were sent multiple times.

The name choices will be one of six questions on the ballot for the referendum, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 26.

The group still has not received approval from the U.S. Department of Justice to hold the election; however, Kirkland said an answer is expected by Thursday.

While the proposed municipality will have a new name, the names of the towns of Graniteville, Vaucluse and Warrenville will remain the same with their post offices, Kirkland said.

"The name of the municipality will not affect the names of the towns," she said.

Attorney Jim Holly, who is representing the GVW committee, said those interested in obtaining a duplicate of the GVW commissioners' submission to the Department of Justice should visit the Law Offices of Hull, Towill, Norman, Barrett & Salley, P.C., 111 Park Ave. S.W., between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Copies of the submission can be inspected or purchased, Holly said.

GVW incorporation election commissioners also named Denton Johnson, Pearl Bledsoe and Josephine Quiller as election managers at Monday's meeting. The decision was based on a recommendation by Stuart Bedenbaugh, executive director of Aiken County Registration and Elections, as the proposed managers are already trained, Kirkland said. If the three agree to serve, their duties will include receiving the results on election night, certifying them and making a report to the election commissioners.

Commissioners also gave their approval for a condensed description of the GVW area, which will be created by Holly and Bedenbaugh, to be added to the ballot. Maps of the incorporation area will be displayed at voting precincts, Holly said.

Kirkland said that once the entire ballot is publicized, it becomes official.

Voters have until July 25 to register for the election. The Aiken County Registration and Elections office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Voter registration applications postmarked by July 26 will also be accepted, Kirkland said.

Residents who are unsure if they live in the GVW area should call the Aiken County Registrations and Elections Office at 642-2028.

Comment Title: they should
I think they should incorporate! As far as I know, there is no where in SC that has that type of goverment! (three consolidated towns, all keeping their own names) it would be a very unique opportunity!
