The Great Debate: Cam Huffman's take on whether Brett Favre should return to the Packers7/5/2008 11:59 PM

The answer to this week's question can be summed up in two words: Why not?
Brett Favre proved that he can still play last season by leading his Green Bay Packers to 13 regular-season wins and narrowly missing out on an appearance in the Super Bowl. Favre threw for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns, posted the highest completion percentage of his career and was selected to compete in his ninth Pro Bowl.
What has Favre itching to return to the gridiron and prolong his streak of 253 straight starts, though, is not another trip to Hawaii, a few more touchdowns to add to his career statistics or even one last ovation from the Lambeau Field crowd. Favre knows that if he comes back for one more season, a trip to Tampa to participate in Super Bowl XLIII is a realistic possibility.
The Pack returns leading rusher Ryan Grant, 1,000-yard receiver Donald Driver and defensive backs Atari Bigby and Charles Woodson, along with most of the other starters from a productive 2007 season, and 2007 NFL Coach of the Year Mike McCarthy is ready to make a run at an NFC title. All the team needs is a quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers has been groomed as Favre's replacement since being drafted out of California in 2005, and although the 24-year-old seems to have all the tools to be a solid professional quarterback, even the most optimistic Packers fan has to realize that there will be some learning curve in his first year as a starter. Ending the season in Tampa would definitely be a longshot with Rodgers under center.
But should Favre return and bring all his experience and his skills in the clutch with him, Packers fans could dream of the ultimate prize.
So again I ask: Why not?
