Constructing a 21-bedroom Fisher
House on the campus of the Charlie Norwood
VA Medical Center Uptown Division
is a priority for the Aiken County
Veterans Council.
"We realize the importance of having
family support on hand when a military
person or veteran is facing hospitalization
for war wounds, injuries or illness," said
Judith Knight, Fisher House Day chair.
"A Fisher House slogan is 'A family's
love is good medicine,'" she added.
"Anyone who has been ill or injured can
appreciate what it would be like to be
hundreds of miles or more from home,
with no loved one at hand to lighten the
ordeal. We are working to help make that
family support a reality and in so doing,
honoring all who serve or have served."
Families stay at a Fisher House comfort
home at no cost. The financial burden to
a family facing lost income and heavy
travel expenses is made more bearable by
not having to pay lodging fees as well.
The Aiken County Veterans Council
is moving forward with its plans for
Fisher House Day 2008 in several ways.
Because of interest and scheduling, Sept.
13 will be the official Fisher House Day,
but the fundraising has begun before and
may continue beyond Sept. 13.
Kicking off the fundraising was the
July 4 blues and beach concert at Historic
Rose Hill Estate. Stephen and Eva
Mueller sponsored the event at their own
cost in order to benefit the Fisher House.
Tickets to the event were exchanged for a
donation and funds raised go toward the
construction of the comfort home.
The CSRA Chapter of the American
Ex-POWs made a sizable donation to
the project as it closed its doors one final
time. These were wounded warriors
reaching out to help other wounded warriors.
Illness and death brought the chapter
to its close.
The two local Marine Corps Leagues,
Aiken's Detachments 939 and North
Augusta's Detachment 1132, will participate
in Stand Ups at which they will
accept donations. Detachment 939 will
be at the new Wal-Mart in Aiken while
Detachment 1132 will be at the new
Wal-Mart in Augusta on Sept. 13.
Country Connection Café is collecting
donations from its patrons, and Our
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Augusta
is sponsoring an ongoing fundraiser with
its members continuing to donate. The
Friends of Freedoms Defenders will
be soliciting donations at Aiken Mall
on Sept. 6 and will be assisting others,
including the Family Readiness Group of
the 1221st S.C. National Guards, which
will host a spaghetti supper on Sept. 20.
DAV-A 43 in Aiken will host a yard
sale Sept. 6, and DAV 43 will match the
funds its auxiliary members raise with a
donation, as well. The Korean War Veterans
Association, Chapter 255, is offering
a lucky person an opportunity to win a
$100 Omaha Steaks gift card in exchange
for a donation. Appearances Salon in
Aiken is asking patrons to donate the
cost of a beauty product or service to the
Fisher Foundation. Members of The Best
of the Red Hat Mamas of Midland Valley
will each bring a "birthday gift" donation
for Fisher House when they celebrate
their chapter birthday on July 24 at Palmetto
House in North Augusta.

Council's website at www.active.com/

Others may wish to send a
donation to Community Foundation of
the CSRA, P.O. Box 31358, Augusta, GA
30903. It is important that the memo line
of the check read "VA Fisher House."
Registration forms may be obtained by
sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope
to Fisher House Day 260 Hill and
Dell Drive Warrenville, SC 29851 or by
contacting AikenFH2008@aol.com.
