GVW. Greggville. Mill Town. If the towns of Graniteville, Vaucluse and Warrenville become incorporated, what should the new city be named?

Commissioners for the Graniteville-Vaucluse-Warrenville, GVW Incorporation, are asking just that.

The group is accepting submissions of possible names for the proposed municipality to be added to the referendum ballot, slated for Aug. 26, granted the group gets approval from the U.S. Department of Justice to hold the election.

According to commission Chairwoman Alice Kirkland, four names will be selected by the committee and included on the election ballot as possible choices for voters.

Kirkland said all submissions should be sent before Monday, July 7, when the commissioners will gather for their next meeting at the Aiken County Council Building, 736 Richland Ave. W. Kirkland stressed that names will not be taken during the meeting, which will begin at 5 p.m.

The meeting is being held so commissioners can choose election managers to work the polling places. Voters will cast their ballots at existing County polling places.

The name for the municipality is one of six questions to be listed on the ballot. Other questions include: A vote in favor or in opposition of the incorporation, its type of government, term limits for City Council members, how elected officials are chosen and a choice between a partisan and nonpartisan form of election for City Council members.

Those who wish to submit names for the proposed municipality should send them to:

Good, rambling comment there, perplexed. Hope those of you who are opposed to incorporation know how much of a turn-off the negativism and unfounded accusations are to those who have followed the story of incorporation from day one. Being hateful has not made you any friends. Had any of you been interested from the beginning and attended the publicized meetings on incorporation, you'd be better prepared to know the facts, not just throw out accusations and attack people who are trying to help while following the state law.

So if the US Department of Justice hasn't given approval to hold the Election can this committee proceed without that approval? Is this a test run or what? Also if Mark Hammond, who is the Secretary of State, (APPOINTED?) Ms Kirkland as Commissioner (according to an Aiken Standard article announcing the first meeting date and time)why did she need to be voted in with a yea or nay by the other 2 folks that were also voted in as Committee members with a yea or nay from each other at this meeting. After all there wasn't but 3 people doing all the voting in. I guess all 3 was hand appointed by each other since the audience wasn't allowed to say anything at this meeting according to Ms Kirkland. I am not sure if this is normal procedure or not? The Incorporation Committee appointed Lawyer Mr Holly who is also the County Planning Lawyer I believe gave some explainations and rules also at the meeting. I understand this meeting was held only for the election of the committee by the 3 committee folks and the Audience could not speak. However one audience member was able to ask if the Ballot form was prepared locally and the answer was yes. It was also agreed upon that Mr Bedenbaugh would oversee the Election. I wonder if the Committee that is being Selected and will be Elected as poll workers at the next meeting on July 7th at 5:00 PM will go through the same classes as regular Election Poll workers or just how official this is going to get if it approved by the DOJ? This is an interesting situation. I hope folks are looking at the problems the citizens of Aiken are going through right now and realize we will be like them and maybe worse because we are spread out in a country setting(except for the folks around the Mill in in the village of Granitville where the GVW fire department is). Can you imagine us folks living in the country part of the Incorporation not being able to trim all those pine trees on your property unless the Committee meets and agrees to let us trim them. We may also pay for a permit to do so. It's going to get rough when the wind blows. It's also going to be rough if we have to pay the water and sewer bills via tax increases or committe agreed raises for those folks that will be required to be on the water/sewer system especially since the majority of us have wells because we live out in the county. I believe the City of Aiken just had an increase in their water bills. With all the big developments going up they are going to need a sewer and water system. I am already wondering how much more our water table can take without going dry? When I drive through the effected areas and see the yes signs I wonder if these folks are owners or renters of the property because Property owners not living in the effected area but paying County Property taxes,(I an specifying this because if we incorporate they will be paying both city and county taxes.)cannot vote at all to say yes or no. So it goes if you are registered to vote and live in the area selected by the Committee to become incorporate you can vote whether you own property or not. If you own property in the selected area and live outside of the area you cannot vote. I can't remember if this rule was reiterated in the meeting by Mr Holly or Ms Kirkland. I would think this will cause property owners to increase their rent to cover the increases due to Incorporation. It's going to be interesting until August 26th unless the DOJ doesn't approve this. This has been going on longer than Hillary and Obama thus far.
