BELVEDERE -- Mr. Richard S. Payton, 78, of Belvedere, S.C., loving husband of 29 years to Rosa Meeks Payton and son of the late Gyp and Mildred Scoggins Payton.

Born in Augusta, Ga., he had lived in the area most of his life. A veteran of the Korean War, he retired from the United States Army with the rank of staff sergeant. He was a Mason, enjoyed camping, going to the beach and mountains and gardening.

In addition to his wife, family members include children, Crystal Wooten of Augusta, Ga., Ava Fraiser of Augusta, Ga., Richard Payton Jr. of Augusta, Ga., Randall Payton of Augusta, Ga., Robin Simpkins of North Augusta, S.C., and Rod Payton of Belvedere, S.C.; siblings, Mary Kral of New Port Richey, Fla., Betty Becker of New Port Richey, Fla., and Dolly Vause of Missouri; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the graveside in Langley Cemetery, Langley, S.C.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 24, 2008, from 7 until 9 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home & Cremation Service, U.S. Highway 1, Langley, S.C.
