DOE says pact sets stage for Savannah site's future

The U.S. Department of Energy's new five-year management contract with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions will set the stage for the future at the Savannah River Site, said DOE Site Manager Jeff Allison at a Rotary Club of Aiken meeting Monday.

That future includes the long-term completion of cleanup efforts of nuclear materials at the site.

Last week DOE submitted a license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulation Commission. DOE wants authorization to construct a repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste at Yucca Mountain, Nev., according to a DOE press release.

While debate on that issue will continue indefinitely, the licensing application is a key step in the process, Allison said.

"If you look at the (Yucca Mountain) location," Allison said, "it certainly appears to be a prime candidate for most of the radioactive materials we have in this country. We'll find out more in the next several years. I'm really optimistic we have something out there, but we'll let the experts be the judge."

As SRS continues its own cleanup efforts, one goal "would be to shrink the boundaries of that cleanup to make way for other missions," Allison said.

He noted that the MOX fuel fabrication facility construction program began about 10 months ago.

The Savannah River National Laboratory is providing some outstanding work for the FBI, Homeland Security and in biofuels.

"The lab is stepping up to be a key player for us around the world," Allison said.

"What the lab has done is focus on its competency areas."
