Kiwanis Club hosts 'Wish Upon A Car'

Palmetto Kiwanis Club of Aiken hosted the Third Annual "Wish Upon A Car" Benefit Car Show on Saturday, April 26 at the Aiken Mall. Despite a few rain showers, several car owners participated in the event. Proceeds from the show benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation and other children's groups, such as Aiken-Barnwell Head Start and Chukker Creek Elementary K-Kids Club.

The following were show winners: Best of Show, Charles Crosby with 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air; Best Paint, Ralph Baker with 1964 Chevrolet Corvette; Best Engine, Tim George with 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle; Best Interior, Mike Todd with 2002 Ford F-150 4x4; Most Unusual, Patsy and Larry Shambley with 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser; People's Choice, Jason Darby with 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix; Best Club, Cheaters Inc.; Classic Truck, Harry Jacobs with 1953 GMC pickup; Modern Truck, Nick Lambert with 1998 Nissan Frontier; Classic Car, Charles Crosby with 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air; Classic Muscle Car, Tim George with 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle; Antique, Gene Black with 1930 Chevrolet 3 Window Coupe; Exotic/European/Foreign, Lewis Fierke with 1953 MG TD; 4x4/SUV, Dave Thompson with 2005 Dodge Daytona Ram 4x4; Import/Domestic Sport Compact, Jesus Nazario with 2004 Nissan Sentra; Street Rod, Harold Glazener with 1947 Chevrolet Coupe; Modern Domestic Car, Patsy and Larry Shambley with 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser; Modern Muscle Car, Kevin Hutto with 1993 Ford Mustang; and Corvette, Linda Cavanaugh with 2001 Chevrolet Corvette.

Gorensek graduates No. 1 from Aquinas

Annelise Hocevar Gorensek graduated valedictorian from Aquinas High School Class of 2008.

Morrison graduates No. 2 from Aquinas

Morgan Ellen McCloy Morrison graduated salutatorian from Aquinas High School Class of 2008.

Eulalie Salley wins excellence award

CENTURY 21 Eulalie Salley was awarded the Five Star Circle of Excellence Award, which recognizes brokers who have met or exceeded their individual objectives for outgoing broker-to-broker referral closings during the calendar year.

Kendrick, Fanning chosen for program

Two South Aiken High School students have been selected to participate in the Clemson School of Materials Science & Engineering Summer Research Program. Sarah Kendrick and Mitchell Fanning, both juniors and students in Beth Beckham's Chemistry II class, will join 10 other high students from across the country in a program that integrates education and research. Participants work in a college graduate research group in the field of materials design from concept to application. High school students will present their results at the end of the program.

Augusta State names dean's list

The following students at Augusta State University were named to the dean's list for the 2008 spring semester: Michael Bykin, Allison Keyser, Jessica Spencer, John Bethell, Summer Covar, Douglas Holley, Philip Javernick, Maggie Needham, Michael Rhoden, Deborah Yonce, Jennifer Hadden, Toni Davis, Scott Gillum, John Kain, Hagen Walker, Jacklyn Benenhaley, Alexandria Roby, Samantha Turner, Aimee Elwell and Hannah Hoover.

Rodriguez receives $5,000 scholarship

Amber Rodriguez of Aiken has been awarded one of 20 $5,000 scholarships from the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association (IPCPR). Rodriguez is using the scholarship to help fund her education at The University of Tennessee where she is majoring in nursing.

The annual essay competition is open to family and employees of retail members of the association. Candidates also must have maintained a 2.5 grade-point average. Rodriguez was sponsored by Pipe Dreams in Aiken.

Crawford enlists with Marine Corps

Civilian Astin W. Crawford, a 2007 graduate of North Augusta High School, recently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps under the Delayed Entry Program with Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Columbia.

The program allows recruits to enter the Marine Corps and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as high school. Using recruiters as mentors, this program helps recruits ease into the transition from civilian to military life.

Crawford will report to Recruit Depot for active duty to undergo basic training in Parris Island or San Diego, Calif.

Smalley elected to college Who's Who

Rachel Smalley of Aiken has been elected to the Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. She is a student at Charleston Southern University.

Kanner-Gates selected for society

The National Society of High School Scholars announced that South Aiken High School student Russel Kanner-Gates from Aiken has been selected for membership. The Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

Barnes, Brown make dean's list

Brittney S. Barnes of Wagener and Heather G. Brown of Langley were named to the dean's list at Francis Marion University for the 2008 spring semester.

Murph headed to Washington, D.C.

Fox Creek High School Principal Dr. Tim Murph will be heading to Washington, D.C. in July to represent the South Carolina Education Association (SCEA) as its state delegate supervisor at the annual National Education Association (NEA) Expo. Dr. Murph won the statewide election in February and will be heading the state delegation as delegates cast their votes on several important issues.

The Citadel names spring dean's list

The following students at The Citadel were named to the dean's list for the 2008 spring semester: William Bryan Gilbert IV, David Nathaniel Huffman and Benjamin Anderson Hunter, who also received a Gold Star.

Gilbert graduates from The Citadel

Cadet William Bryan Gilbert IV of Wagener graduated from the The Citadel on May 3. He earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science and achieved the dean's list recognition. Gilbert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Brian Frazier.

Sumerau receives Award of Excellence

The National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi presented Augusta State University student Jason Edward Sumerau with the Award of Excellence for the 2008-2009 academic year on April 15. The Award of Excellence will enable the North Augusta native to pursue master's and doctorate degrees in sociology at Florida State University. He is the son of Edward and Patricia Sumerau.

Bohanan, Bowden graduated May 1

Shawn M. Bohanan and Anna Patricia Bowden, summa cum laude, graduated from North Greenville University on Thursday, May 1.

Nicosia, Smith finalists for project

Allie Nicosia and Shelby Smith were named as National Finalists for their marketing research project. They placed first in the opening round of competition and advanced to the final round where they placed in the top 14 overall among approximately 180 other teams. For their research event, Nicosia and Smith prepared a 30-page research paper analyzing a business within their community and identified ways in which the organization could improve its environmental impact. Based on the findings from their research, the students developed a green marketing campaign and gave a 20-minute presentation to business executives outlining their research, campaign ideas and recommendations.

DECA members place high in events

Several South Aiken DECA members won the DECA Gold Award of Excellence for placing in the top 15 percent in their events. These students include Brittany Skinner and Ashley Coomes for their public relations campaign promoting the Make A Wish Foundation and Laura Johnson and Lauren Hall for their entrepreneurship project that involved preparing a business plan and presenting a proposal for a new health club.

This is the third year in a row that Skinner has won this award.

Johnson and Hall also received this award last year.

Byrd places second in poster contest

Byrd Elementary won second place in the state for having the most students participate in the National Transportation Week Poster Contest. Beth Teeters, an art teacher, was responsible for the top three winners from Aiken County. Savannah Gosset from Gloverville placed third, Victoria Hawkins from Byrd placed second and Petey Santizo from Byrd placed first.

Rybicki named to Mars Hill honor roll

Samantha Lee Rybicki of Aiken was named to the honor roll of the Academic Dean for the spring 2008 semester at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.

Kellie Hair to play on international team

Kellie N. Hair, a student at Aiken Technical College, has been invited to play on the USA Athletes International Softball Team in Chianti, Italy, on August 3-12. Kellie won All-Region 2007-08 at ATC. She has signed to play for USCA for the 2009 season. Brittany Turner from ATC has also been invited to play in Italy. She won All Tournament in Hartsville on May 4.

Students make all A Honor Roll

The following students at Leavelle McCampbell were named to the A Honor Roll: William Hardy, Natalie Arthur, Taylor Coleman, Lynwood Duggan, Seth Manning, Ashlyn Regan and Holly Rittenberry.

Clemson names its president's list

The following students at Clemson University were named to the president's list for the 2008 spring semester: Sarah Blanton, Elizabeth Brown, Lauren Garcia, Carrie Herron, Sarah Johnson, Allison Kaplan, Laura Loughlin, Jordan Maivelett, Chandler Martin, Charles Martin, Amy McLeod, Michelle Motyka, Cari Oehlberg, Emily Ormand, Anna Sparks, Sara Sparks, Lindsay Anderson, Gabriel Dobbs, Sarah Edison, Jacquelyn Hamm, Aaron Ingle, Maria Reynolds, and Joshua Sexton.

Newberry names spring dean's list

The following students at Newberry College were named to the dean's list for the spring 2008 semester: Wesley Hale Baldwin, Mickey Lee Bigg, Lindsy Shirley Elliott and Kenneth Gene Heath.

Oakman graduates from Cornell University

Krishna Gabrielle Oakman of Beech Island has graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in hotel and restaurant administration with the Class of 2008 during Commencement ceremonies in Ithaca, N.Y.
