Investigators are asking for the public’s help identifying a driver who stuck two motorcyclists in Clearwater early Thursday morning, killing one and injuring another.
James Alan Cohrs, 56, of Rita Court in North Augusta, was the second motorcyclist hit by an unidentified driver on Storm Branch Road shortly after 1 a.m. He died from multiple body trauma. He was driving a 1985 Harley Davidson.
The first man struck, survived the crash, Michael Younts, 48, of Coventry Court in North Augusta. He was also driving a Harley Davidson.
Both men were traveling north on Storm Branch Road when Younts was struck from behind and left the roadway. He was taken to an area hospital where he has been treated and released.
Approximately 100 yards away, the same vehicle then struck and killed Cohrs.
He was pronounced dead a the scene.
Investigators had little information to release, but about 11 a.m. Thursday called local media outlets to a press conference, asking the public’s help identifying the driver.
Lt. Trey Stephens said troopers have recovered evidence and hope to release more vehicle information later in the day, but added that at the moment they are looking for a vehicle, possibly a pickup truck with heavy front end damage.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the hit and run was an intentional act.
The motorcyclists had just left the Iron Horse Ranch in Beech Island. They were hit about four miles away from the bar.
Investigators are still gathering evidence form the crash scene and talking with the surviving victim.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the S.C. Highway Patrol at 803-641-7657.
