A single-vehicle crash in North Augusta on Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a Warrenville woman after she lost control of her vehicle and was thrown from her car.

Dana M. Morris, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

The driver of a 1992 Honda Accord, Morris was the lone occupant in the vehicle when she veered off the roadway and into the median along U.S. Highway 1 around 1:13 p.m., officials said.

"There is some suspicion that she may have been using her cell phone near the time of the crash, as the last call showed a 1:13 p.m. time on it," Carlton said.

Several bottles of prescription medications were found in the vehicle, although none of the prescriptions was in her name, he added.

Toxicology is pending.

The fatal crash falls in the middle of the state's Buckle Up campaign.

"This is why people need to buckle up," said Lt. Tim Pearson, a spokesperson for the North Augusta Department of Public Safety.

Speed is also thought to have been a factor, the lieutenant added.

Police officers are talking with the victim's family and friends in an effort to find out where she had been earlier in the day and what her plans were that evening.

"The sad part of this is that it doesn't just affect the person killed," Pearson said. "There are family and friends who are going to have to cope with this."

This is the 12th fatal crash in Aiken County this year and the second fatal crash in the last 72 hours, Carlton said.

It is also the second fatal crash in North Augusta this year, Pearson added.

I dont understand :  5/23/2008

I witnessed this car accident and I dont understand why some things in particular did/didnt take place. They left her laying there for quite a while without covering her, after she had passed. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes for them to move her. I just felt bad and felt that it was a little disrespectful to her for people to be able to ride by and look at her while she is laying there like that. I also dont think that it should have been posted that she had some prescription stuff in her car until tox screen proved that it was in her system. She could have been doing a favor for someone that wasnt able to pick up their medicine, and taking it to them. I just dont think that it was fair. Maybe I was just extra sad because I had just witnessed every second of a very depressing and sad accident. I wish the very best for her family and even more for her children. I think about it, and pray for them more than one time every day.
