The Savannah River Winds take the stage under open skies this evening for the latest entry in the Hopelands Summer Concert Series.

The group performs at 7 p.m. today on the Roland H. Windham Performing Arts Stage in Hopelands Gardens. The concert is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

Savannah River Winds was formed in 2001 by Lou Cefus and Richard D. Brasco as a performance vehicle for the area's band directors, music professors, musicians from professional fields, military band members and college students.

Since then the ensemble has amassed an impressive list of performance credits, including the 2004 Georgia Music Educators Association State Music In-Service Convention in Savannah and the 2006 South Carolina Music Educators State Music convention in Charleston. Savannah River Winds also recorded 10 pieces by composer David Shaffer for the CD "Legend of the Sword: The Music of David Shaffer." Shaffer directed the ensemble during recordings of several of the pieces.

Upcoming entries in the Hopelands Summer Concert Series include the Aiken Civic Ballet on May 26; Carolina Rebels on June 2; the Fort Gordon Concert Band on June 9; Maureen Simpson and Friends with the Aiken Choral Society on June 16; Preston and Weston featuring Sandra Simmons on June 23; the DePriest Trio on June 30; the U.S. Marine Corps Band on July 7; Chris Mangelly on July 14; Alysa Smith on July 21; Aiken Brass on July 28; the Fort Gordon Dixieland Band on Aug. 4; Fabio Mann and Friends on Aug. 11; and Southern Nights on Aug. 18.

The series concludes with a 6:30 p.m. performance by the Aiken Community Band on Aug. 25.

Public parking is available at the Green Boundary Club on Whiskey Road, across from the park. There is no parking available on adjacent streets Berrie Road or Dupree Place, according to City of Aiken recreation program coordinator Alicia Davis. Handicap-accessible parking is available at Rye Patch.

In the event of rain, Summer Concert Series performances may be moved to an indoor venue or canceled; to check on rain schedule changes, call 643-4661. For more information about the series schedule, call the City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism at 642-7631.
