Character is defined by what you do when you think no one is looking.
On Saturday morning nearly two hundred students from all over Aiken County received high honors for their exemplary character. Nominated by a teacher and selected to represent their school, the students have been turning heads for their model classroom behavior demonstrating many levels of high character.
The Joint Women's Clubs of Aiken formally recognized students from public, private and home-school students in grades K-12 at the annual Character First observance held at St. Angela Hall at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
As students arrived in the morning, they eagerly searched the walls for their picture. Along with each photograph, the nominating letter from the teachers were on display. Children blushed as they read them while their proud parents beamed. Students were described by their teachers as "super students, organized, kind, articulate, responsible, dependable, role models who exemplify character in the areas of knowledge determination, gratitude, generosity, resourcefulness, fairness, hope, conviction and obedience."
Betty Thomason served as the Aiken Women's Club Chairperson, Celebration of Character leading the ceremony. Aiken Mayor Fred Cavanaugh served as the guest speaker and as a presenter. The awards were also presented to the students by Aiken City Manager Roger LeDuc, Aiken Human Resources Director Kenny Cook, Aiken Woman's Club representatives Betty Thomason, Andrea Lutz, Missy Johnson and Nanci Carter.
Character First of Aiken celebrates character everyday.
