The Salvation Army Nancy Moore Thurmond Boys & Girls Club of Aiken helped the Pine Log Road Bi-Lo grocery store increase its sales of virtual golf balls Thursday.
The "golf balls" are slips of paper marked "Bi-Lo Charities: It Only Takes A Dollar to Make a Difference," with a bar code to ring up contributions for the local store's fundraising drive for the Bi-Lo Charity Golf Classic coming up in June. The virtual golf balls were available for a minimum donation of $1, and 13 young Boys & Girls Club members helped solicit donations outside the store Thursday.
To sweeten the deal, the club members along with Chief Professional Officer Shawn Risher and Director of Operations Normand Roy were giving away slices of pizza with each donation, from pies donated by Papa John's Pizza.
"This is the 25th anniversary of the Bi-Lo Charity Golf Classic. It is billed as the largest single-day golf tournament in the United States," said Bi-Lo manager Keith Sizemore. "Last year it raised over five and a half million dollars for Bi-Lo charities in the Southeast. The tournament is held in June in Greenville on 15 different golf courses simultaneously."
Bi-Lo cashiers are offering customers the chance to purchase virtual golf balls at the cash register in stores across the Southeast up to tournament time, according to Sizemore. Sales of virtual golf balls began on May 9, and the Boys & Girls Club fundraising drive Thursday marked the official kickoff of fundraising season.
Some of the proceeds from the golf tournament will go to the Boys & Girls Club, Sizemore said.
"Each local area group of stores picks a charity to raise money for," he said. "We've partnered with the Boys & Girls Club for four years now. We feel like it's a worthwhile group, helping raise, teach and develop our young people."
"If I'm not mistaken, Bi-Lo's charitable philosophy is children, education and hunger, and we address all those at the Boys & Girls Club," said Risher. "They've been so good to us; we'll help them every chance we get."
