The Aiken branch of the American Association of University Women honored its book sale volunteers with an afternoon of good food and fresh air Thursday.
A group of some 50 volunteers, spouses and AAUW members gathered Thursday at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center for a Volunteer Appreciation Picnic. The party was in celebration of volunteers' work at the 2008 AAUW Book Sale, held the first weekend of March at the Club Fitness building adjacent to Hitchcock Plaza.
"Our volunteers are extremely important. We couldn't run a Book Fair without them, and we're so grateful to have them," said AAUW branch President Bea Peyser. "This is our fifth year doing a picnic, and it grows every year."
The AAUW bought chicken from Fatz Cafe and KFC, and branch members brought homemade salads, vegetables and desserts to fill out the buffet.
The Book Sale involves the efforts of AAUW members and some 90 volunteers who are not members, according to publicity chair Brigitte Wilson.
"We're so indebted to our volunteers and to the people who brought us books to sell. We couldn't do it without either of them," Wilson said.
Planning for next year's book sale will begin in the fall, according to Peyser, but the AAUW is already accepting book donations. For information about volunteering for next year's event or to donate books, call 642-7170.
