The Aiken County Historical Society will gather for its 2008 spring meeting this weekend.
The Historical Society holds three meetings each year, in winter, spring and fall, according to President Allen Riddick. This year's spring meeting will begin with music from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday with the meeting set to begin at 3 p.m. at the Aiken County Historical Museum. The museum is located at 433 Newberry St. S.W., off South Boundary.
"Our speaker will be Bettis Rainsford," said Riddick. "He is 'the' Edgefield historian - he's not a professional historian, but he probably knows more about Edgefield history than anyone. We got him because a lot of Aiken County came out of the old Edgefield district in 1871. It was a big thing - Edgefield was really a very large district at one time, very powerful, and during Reconstruction, it was decided to carve away part of Edgefield and fold it into Aiken County, kind of as a punishment to the district is what I gather."
The topic builds on points touched on by guest speaker Owen Clary at the Historical Society's winter meeting, according to Riddick.
The Aiken County Historical Society's mission is to preserve the history of Aiken County. The 2008 spring meeting is free and open to the public, and information on joining the Historical Society will be available at the museum. A reception is to follow the meeting, according to Riddick.
"We hope to find a few new members. We usually get at least a little interest from new people at each meeting," Riddick said.
