Vera Mincey Heaton-Johnson

A memorial service for Mrs. Vera Mincey Heaton-Johnson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Aiken with the Rev. Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. Private graveside services will be held in Aiken Memorial Gardens before the memorial service. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the memorial service.

Mrs. Heaton-Johnson, of Dunbarton Circle, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her home. She was born January 10, 1913, in Floyds Township, Horry County, S.C., to Alva D. and Agnes Lou Shelley Mincey. She graduated from McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing, Florence, S.C., in 1934 and worked in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Greenville, S.C., before moving to Aiken in 1954. At Aiken County Hospital, she was an emergency medical instructor, in-service coordinator and assistant director of nursing. She completed advanced courses at USC School of Nursing on in-service education and supervision and was appointed by the governor as a member of the Aiken County Ambulance Commission.

Mrs. Heaton-Johnson was an active member of First Baptist Church in Aiken and received Eastern Star recognition for 50 years of service in 2006.

She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, niece, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was predeceased by her son, William Roy Heaton, who died May 4, 2007.

Her survivors include two sons, Jim (Lisa) Heaton and Dan (Debby) Heaton; six grandchildren, Jim Heaton, Katrina Snyder, Will Heaton, Brian Heaton, Mary Addie Heaton and Anna Heaton Lovelace; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three nieces, Linda Faye Mincey Bailey, Vera Ellen (Johnny) Neville and Mary Anne (Tom) Mall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3157, Aiken, SC 29802.
