Passport Fair will be held at the post office

International travelers need to keep their passports up-to-date, and the Aiken County Post Office on Laurens Street is offering a Passport Fair to help those with busy work weeks get the paperwork together.
The passport fair will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Laurens Street branch of the U.S. Postal Service. Postal clerks will be accepting applications for passports, giving out application forms and taking passport photos during those hours.
"We do these to give people that work during the week the chance to come in and do this without having to take time off from work," said postal clerk Judy Dudley.
Those filing passport applications Saturday should bring a valid driver's license and a state-certified birth certificate, according to Dudley. If the application is for a minor under the age of 16, a long form birth certificate with both parents' names on it is required. If the applicant has an expired passport, they should bring that along as well, Dudley said.
"Right now application processing is at two to four weeks, or one to two weeks if you expedite it," she said.
Application fees are $100 for a basic adult passport book and $85 for a child's passport book. Applications for passport cards which the U.S. Department of State will not begin processing until July are $45 for adult cards and $35 for children's cards. An additional fee of approximately $100 will be added to expedite an application, according to Dudley. The Post Office will shoot passport photos for a $15 fee.
"The Department of Homeland Security will be requiring that U.S. citizens have passports for any travel outside the country starting in January of 2009," Dudley said. "Passport cards will be limited only for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean."
