The Women of Woodside celebrated 20 years of dedication to the community on Wednesday at Woodside Plantation.
"We have come a long way. In 1988, the Plantation Activities Committee was formed, and the name was changed to the Women of Woodside the following year," said President Ginger Talbert. "In September of 1990, there were only 75 members. and in 1992, the membership increased to 171 members. Today, we have over 730 members. Without the past leadership and the strong support of the WOW members, the Women of Woodside would not be what it is today."
In honor of the 20th anniversary celebration, Aiken Mayor Fred Cavanaugh issued an official proclamation declaring May 14 Women of Woodside Day in the City of Aiken and encouraged all citizens to recognize and commend the Women of Woodside for their mission of serving others with their various activities and volunteer work.
On March 17, the Women of Woodside held its first tennis/golf tournaments chaired by Dot Martin and organized by Tony Allman and Debby St. Clair-Zion. The events raised $28,000, and, on Wednesday afternoon, the Women Of Woodside presented checks for $14,000 to Helping Hands and the Aiken Area Council on Aging.
Over the past year, the Women of Woodside provided donations totaling $63,000 to the following charitable organizations: Aiken Area Council on Aging, ACTS, Aiken Celebration of Character, Aiken Community Band, Free Medical Clinic of Aiken County, Aiken County HELPLINE, Aiken Red Cross, Aiken Regional Library System, Aiken Opera Society, All Aboard!, Aiken SPCA, Aiken Symphony Guild, Aiken Technical College, Aiken Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Aiken Women's Heart Board, Alzheimer's Memory Walk, Booklovers Bookstore, Children's Place, Cumbee Center, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Helping Hands, Mental Health Association of Aiken County, Public Education Partners, Rotary Club of Aiken South, Salvation Army, Trauma Bear Program (Aiken Public Safety), Tri-Development Center, United Way of Aiken and Very Special Arts/Special Olympics.
