AUGUSTA -- The Girl Scouts Central Savannah River Council honored its 2008 Women of Excellence with an awards banquet Wednesday at the Augusta Marriott Hotel.
The banquet featured an appearance by keynote speaker Dominique Dawes, an Olympic gold-medal gymnast turned motivational speaker. Dawes focuses her efforts on building self-esteem and confidence in young women and has been the spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of America's Uniquely Me campaign, Dove soaps' Campaign for Real Beauty and the American Heart Association's Choose To Move program.
"I was never a Girl Scout. I missed out on it because I really did not have the time, not when I was putting in 30 to 40 hours a week on the mat," Dawes said. "Now, when I hear about the Girl Scouts' self-led programs for girls heavily involved in sports, I go, 'Why didn't you have that back in the '80s when I was growing up?'"
Emcee Jennie Montgomery of News Channel 6 called for applause for the Girl Scouts' awards selection committee, which reviewed some 20 nominees and then chose seven 2008 Women of Excellence award recipients.
Dr. Deidre Martin, vice chancellor of university advancement at USC Aiken, was one of two recipients of the Women of Excellence in Education award.
"I'm certainly very flattered and honored by this award," Martin said. "I feel a sense of commitment because of the blessings I've been given in my life to help young girls coming up now."
Also receiving the 2008 Women of Excellence in Education award was Dr. Sandy Reinke, associate professor of political science at Augusta State University.
Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art education director Dorothy Fletcher Eckmann received the 2008 Women of Excellence in Arts award. The Women of Excellence in Business award went to Donna L. Lovelace, vice president of Augusta Mortgage Company. Judy Jefferson Lamback, director of the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club Inc., received the Women of Excellence in Community Service award. The 2008 Women of Excellence in Government award was given to Stephanie Quattlebaum, economic development director at the CSRA Regional Development Center. Dr. Jill A. Miller, director of student health services at the Medical College of Georgia, received the Women of Excellence in Health Award. The Women of Excellence in Professions award went to Carolyn Moore, pastor of Mosaic United Methodist Church.
The Girl Scout Council also presented six Young Women of Excellence awards Wednesday. Recipients were Raven Brooks, for community service; Reatna Taylor, for high school scholarship; Ivana Hughes, for leadership; Victoria Mae Leonard, for middle school scholarship; Milinda Brown, for student athletics; and Catherine Smith, receiving the Callie Meadows Memorial Award.
The Women of Excellence awards program is designed to recognize women who embody the ideals of confidence, character, courage and service, which the Girl Scouts program strives to instill in young women.
