For a year, volunteers have worked around the clock to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Dances, golf tournaments, car shows, flocking, store promotions, dinners and many more events were held as fundraisers. All of the hard work will culminate in the 24-hour event set to begin rain or shine on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Aiken High School track.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the local American Cancer Society. More than 40 teams have made plans to be on hand for the walk, setting up booths and participating in contests. According to coordinators, the public is encouraged to join the festivities.

The event will start by recognizing survivors with a survivor's lap followed by a special dinner. As the evening progresses and team members continue their walk around the track, luminaries will light up the night at 10 p.m. during the Ceremony of Hope, joining dozens of other Relay For Life events across the Southeast. Luminaries may be purchased to support anyone battling cancer, to honor anyone who has fought cancer or in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. This year, luminaries are also available to recognize the lives of pets who have battled cancer.

Earlier this month, Aiken Mayor Fred Cavanaugh made an official proclamation declaring May as "Paint the Town Purple Month." He said, "Relay For Life is the ... signature event and is the unique community event that celebrates cancer survivors and focuses attention on the fight against cancer through fundraising that supports research, prevention, treatment, patient services, advocacy and volunteerism."

Those interested in joining the fight against cancer are encouraged to e-mail raider82@bellsouth.net. To register for Relay For Life, call 270-4899 or 644-1555. To make a donation, visit www.screlayforlife.org.
