Five USC Aiken students will get the chance to participate in a banking fellowship this summer and during the school year.
Security Federal Bank has partnered with the university and its School of Business Administration to establish the program.
The students will work full-time this summer and part-time once school starts. Security Federal will also contribute $14,000 annually to provide scholarships for the students and to establish a Security Federal banking professor to facilitate the program.
"It's a unique program for us," said School of Business Dean Dr. Ralph Byington. "It combines scholarships with work and internship experience."
The program will benefit the students and the bank, said Security Federal Chairman and CEO Tim Simmons. The students will discover if they want to pursue banking as a career, he said, and also determine the area of banking they prefer and if they want to work for Security Federal.
"It also gives us a chance to decide if we want to employ them," Simmons said. "When they graduate, their chance for success in their career is much greater. We also would be able to start them out in a higher position and higher salary than they would get without having prior experience."
The students selected through interviews and academic criteria are Logan Bryant, Betsy Davis, Jana Chavous, Megan Starnes and Andrea Alvarado.
"It's a way to find out if a banking career is really what I want to do," Chavous said. "I'll get to work in all areas, not just one sector."
USCA Chancellor Dr. Tom Hallman said the program is another great example of how the university is linked to the community.
"Security Federal came to us with a need to find fresh talent and grow some of their own managers," Hallman said. "The business department was creative in putting this together and provides a link of what goes on in the classroom and in the real world."
