Run or walk on Saturday and help make sure no one is turned away from the new Aiken County Family YMCA because of his or her inability to pay.
The new YMCA is hosting its second Trolley Run 5K Family Fun Run/Walk beginning and ending at the traffic circle in Trolley Run Station off Robert M. Bell Parkway. The race begins at 8 a.m. with registration lasting from 7 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. About 75 people participated last year.
"We held it last year and it was such fun," said Millie Schumacher. "Many runners said, 'Man, this is one of the most challenging.'"
The 5K run/walk is a fundraiser for the YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign and the financial scholarships offered through the campaign, which ensures everyone can take part in the Y's programs.
Schumacher said most of the funds will benefit childcare programs. Last year, with the help of the Family Fun Run/Walk, $645,000 was raised.
The event also includes a quarter-mile Kids' Run, which starts at 9 a.m.
Awards will be given to overall winners and winners of each age group.
Land in Trolley Run Station will also be the site of the new Wyatt Family YMCA. Billed as a full-service YMCA, the facility will include a 50,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility with an indoor eight-lane lap pool, a separate handicap-accessible therapy pool, a fitness center for adults and kids, a playground, an indoor elevated running track, group exercise rooms, a gymnasium and an outdoor pool and water park.
Registration for the 5K is $20 per person. There is no entry fee for the Kids' Run.
Participants may register the morning of the race or in advance at the Aiken County Family YMCA located inside Hitchcock Healthcare, 690 Medical Park Drive.
For more information, call the Aiken County Family YMCA at 293-4200.
