Rev. Wright coming to Aiken

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright - Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor thrust into the national spotlight - is scheduled to participate in a revival at Second Baptist Church in Aiken on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, according to media reports.

Wright reportedly has visited the church four times previously.

Second Baptist Church pastor Doug Slaughter and another pastor, Brendolyn Jenkins, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Obama, who is getting closer to the Democratic presidential nomination, has for several weeks tried to distance himself from his longtime pastor, who is retiring from the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

In sermons dating back several years, Wright has called the U.S. government "imperialist." He generated intense debate when he said, in part, five years ago: "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human."

Obama has repeatedly denounced Wright's statements. Last week, Obama told the Associated Press: "I have said before and I will say again that some of the comments Rev. Wright has made offend me and I understand why they have offended the American people."

At an NAACP dinner in Detroit last week, Wright said he is describing "the conditions of this country" and is not being divisive when speaking about racial injustice.

"I've been running for Jesus a long, long time and I'm not tired yet," Wright said at the dinner.

Obama won handily over Sen. Hillary Clinton in North Carolina's primary Tuesday, while Clinton was a narrow victor in Indiana. She has vowed to remain in the race for the nomination.
