Chase Epting claims regional golf tourney
Chase Epting of Aiken Preparatory School scored two victories in two weeks in regional and state golf competitions held in South Carolina.
Chase won the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Region 1-A Tournament at Pine Ridge Country Club last Thursday shooting 73 in 18 holes of play. This is his second year in a row winning the SCISA Regional Tournament and the fourth year in a row he has been named to the SCISA All-Region Golf Team. Aiken Prep finished fourth in its division.
The State Championship Tournament was held this week at Quail Ridge Country Club. Epting shot a 76 and 84 Monday and Tuesday to finish first in the 1-A division and top 20 overall. Aiken Prep finished fourth in the division. Chase will play golf this fall for the Anderson University Trojans.
Arbaugh tabbed for North-South game
Aiken shortstop Sam Arbaugh was recently selected to compete in the North-South All-Star Game.
Arbaugh led the Lady Hornets to a victory over Lexington High School - their second win over the Lady Wildcats this season, as well as in the school's history - and to a berth in the Class AAAA playoffs.
Arbaugh will play on the North 4A-1A roster.
BASEBALL
Brookland-Cayce 3
Midland Valley 1
Adam Westmoreland struck out 16 batters and Brookland-Cayce overcame a 1-0 deficit to beat Midland Valley in the second round of the Class AAA Lower State Playoffs Monday.
The Mustangs went up 1-0 on a Cody McElhaney home run in the top of the fourth inning, but Brookland-Cayce struck back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take its first lead, 2-1.
B-C added an insurance run in the sixth, and despite a complete game six-hitter from McElhaney and doubles from Josh Adams and Taylor Grover, the Mustangs lost their first postseason game of the year.
Midland Valley will now have to fight its way back from the loser's bracket if it hopes to compete for a Lower State title. The Mustangs will take on the winner of the Lakewood-Lake City game Wednesday at 7 p.m. in an elimination game at Midland Valley Taylor Grover will start on the hill, although head coach Bruce Zuehlke says every arm will be available in such an important game.
A win in that contest would give Zuehlke's squad a chance to play Brookland-Cayce once again in the Lower State Championship. MVHS would have to win twice should that situation arise.
SOCCER
North Augusta Girls 2
Wren Girls 1
Penalty kicks made the difference, and North Augusta High School's Keely Gillespie made the crucial boot Monday evening in her squad's 2-1 road win versus Wren, in the first round of the AAAA girls soccer playoffs.
Hank Deer, North Augusta's coach, noted that the game was exceptionally physical, with three yellow cards and one red card being issued to Wren players along the way. Lady Jacket goalie Jordan Hart made seven saves.
Deer's squad scored first, as Nina Morales connected on an assist from Sam Abbott. Wren countered by way of Hannah Gmerek, and the game was still locked at 1-1 after four overtime periods, so the game went to penalty kicks, going 3-3 through the first round. In the second round, Gillespie connected and her Wren counterpart did not. North Augusta (15-5) now advances to a Wednesday road game at Fort Mill.
