The City of Aiken's Environmental Committee will celebrate Earth Day 2008 on Friday.

The fourth annual event will start at 9 a.m. and last until noon at Hopelands Gardens. The public is welcome to attend at no cost.

This year's theme is "Recycling E-waste," said Tim Coakley, assistant director of Public Works. During the event, e-waste, or electronic waste, will be collected in the Hopelands Gardens parking lot off Dupree Place. There will be a small fee collected by the recycling company for the proper disposal of these items.

E-waste refers to old computers, printers, fax machines, cell phones, batteries or any other electronic device that is no longer being used.

The Environmental Committee urges people to drop off their e-waste so it can be disposed of in an environmentally sound way. Many of these kind of devices contain hazardous metals and compounds that can leach into the groundwater if they are dumped in a landfill.

By recycling it, e-waste is broken down into separate parts and sold to be reused. Nothing goes into a landfill.

"The morning will start with a welcome by the mayor," Coakley said.

In addition to the e-waste collection, Coakley added there will be about 20 exhibitors in Hopelands including Adopt-a-Highway, a representative from the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory with critters, the Aiken Gem and Fossil Society, the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center and more.

City of Aiken Horticulturist Tom Rapp and members of his staff will lead tours of the gardens. Tours of the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum will be available as well.

"The day's purpose is to raise awareness on all types of green issues," Coakley said.

For more information, call Coakley at 642-7613.
