There will be plenty of sunshine and clear skies for today's 42nd Renewal of the Aiken Spring Steeplechase at Ford Conger Field at the Aiken Horse Park.
"It will be a beautiful day," said Dan Miller, National Weather Service forecaster. "The temperature will be in the mid-70s, and winds will be 10-15 mph from the southwest. There will be a dry front coming in Saturday night, and the temperatures will be a bit cooler Sunday with the high in the mid-60s."
A family name synonymous with Aiken will be well represented at today's races. There will be three generations of Hitchcock members. Billy Hitchcock will be accompanied by his son, Willie Hitchcock, and grandson, Willie Hitchcock.
The Aiken Steeplechase Association will honor the National Steeplechase Association executive office and its staff, William Gallo Jr., director of racing; Peter D. McGivney, general manager; Mary T. Guessford, horseman's liaison, and Nancy L. Dougherty, executive secretary, at today's races.
The gates are scheduled to open at 9:30 a.m.; the Village of Shops open at 10 a.m.; the Guarantor Tent Party starts at 11 a.m.; the post time for the first race is 1 p.m.
The Guarantor Tent Party tickets have been sold out.
Subscriber tickets are $15, and general admission tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children 6 or younger are admitted free.
