Since the tornadoes struck our area last Saturday night, hundreds of residents in Aiken County are spending long days salvaging keepsakes from the rubble, pulling debris from their yards and confronting the daunting task of starting over. Dedicated volunteers and staff of the Aiken County Chapter of the American Red Cross mobilized quickly Saturday evening to begin the process of providing the essentials of emergency assistance, food, shelter, clothing, and other basic relief services to 325 clients in order to get them through this initial phase of their personal crisis.
Red Cross damage assessment teams continue to determine the extent of storm damage in the heavily hit areas of Bath and Clearwater, as well as other locations in our county that were impacted.
Case workers will continue over the next few days to provide outreach to the families whose homes were destroyed or heavily damaged in efforts to provide them with long-term disaster assistance. Individuals requiring this assistance may call 641-4152 or 507-8462.
The Aiken Chapter's Emergency Response Vehicle has been on site since Saturday night and continues to travel every day to affected neighborhoods, providing food and water, tarps and other supplies to people in needs.
Thus far, the Aiken Chapter has spent more than $14,000 and expenses are expected to increase to approximately $20,000 in our service area.
