Tomorrow's 42nd Renewal of the Aiken Spring Steeplechase will feature several of the nation's premier steeplechase horses in the $45,000 Southern Bank & Trust Imperial Cup.
Among the horses who will be in Saturday's feature race will be Ernie Oare's EMO Stable's Orison, who won the 2007 Grade 2 Carolina First Carolina Cup Hurdle Stakes at Springdale Race Course in Camden. The 6-year-old chestnut son of Grade 2 winner Pulpit is part of the powerful entry conditioned by Doug Fout, which, along with Brigadoon Stable's Gliding (NZ), makes for a potent entry in the field of six horses. Orison also finished second in the 2007 Grade I Lonesome Glory Hurdle at Belmont Park on Sept. 22, and has bankrolled $171,731.
Orison was conditioned on the flat by Alan Goldberg for former owner Jayeff B Stable. The gelding was the first foal of stakes placed Sazarac Jazz, a daughter of Dixieland Band, who was out of the Proud Truth broodmare Low Tolerance, and bankrolled $298,837 during her career. Matt McCarron has drawn the riding assignment on the Doug Fout charge.
Jill Thomas, Howard Hickey, Aiken Steeplechase Association president, Bernie Kane, ASA vice president, and Mimie Percival inspected the Aiken Racecourse at Ford Conger Field at the Aiken Horse Park.
Strong winds during the past few days have created extra work but Ranco Tents and the Aiken Steeplechase Association have been able to remedy the problem.
"We appreciate all the hard work by Ranco Tents," said Girl Conger Wolcott with the Aiken Steeplechase Association.
Tickets to the Guarantor Tent Party near the finish line are $100 each and $50 for children age 6 through 12.
A buffet luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will feature an open bar and live musical entertainment.
Subscriber tickets are $15, and general admission tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children 6 or younger are admitted free.
Tickets are available at Aiken Drug, Aiken Saddlery, Aiken Ship, Floyd & Green, Ingate Professional Pharmacy, Lominick Pharmacy, Plum Pudding, Southern Bank & Trust, Stoplight Deli, Unique Expressions and the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce.
