WINDSOR -- Katydid Farm hosted its seventh annual A Sporting Day of Traditional Driving on Wednesday, and singles, pairs and tandems and multiples took part in the carriage driving event.
The entries for the event were judged on presentation of a country drive that included five tests and concluded with the entries having to successfully navigate an obstacle course.
It was a family affair for Kendall Wheeler as the day of carriage driving served as the perfect vehicle for spending time with her daughter.
"My daughter Robin Wheeler Azqueta came up from Palm Beach and drove all day yesterday to be here with me today as a surprise," Wheeler said. "My horses are Palomino Paso Finos. We just got this carriage two days ago, and it's made by Hardwick."
Renowned carriage driver Jean-Paul Gautier of Aiken was also at A Sporting Day of Traditional Driving.
"My student Sandie Nicolaisen is driving Valentino, a 5-year-old Warmblood, and she did very well in the presentation class and cross-country class," Gautier said. "Valentino is a very talented horse."
Katrina Becker's Katydid Farm has established a reputation as one of the premier combined driving event venues in the Southeast.
"It's a great place for pleasure driving, combined driving and traditional driving," Gautier said. "It's a safe place; the shows are very well organized. It has a great environment. It's become one of the top places in the country for any type of driving show. The shows are getting bigger, and more people are coming to Aiken to drive."
An Aiken winter resident, Nicolaisen is a student of Gautier.
"I'm just happy to be out here," Nicolaisen said. "I love my horse, and I love driving. Jean-Paul has been driving my horse for two years. He's 5 years old and very green, and I'm thrilled to be doing this at this stage in his training. He's very young."
