Equine theme to connect signings, at Book Stall

The Book Stall plans an author event with plenty of equine interest for the Triple Crown weekend.
Peter Tattersall, author of the racing thriller "Or Else...!," and horse trainer Sam Morton, author of the equine-themed novel "Where the Rivers Run North," will be the featured guests at a book signing from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at The Book Stall on Hayne Avenue.
While Morton's historical novel is set in what would become Montana and Wyoming, Tattersall's present-day novel spends considerable time in Aiken -- the Aiken of the equine set, to be exact, according to The Book Stall's Meg Ferguson.
"I started reading it today, and I'm right at chapter 14," Ferguson said of Tattersall's novel. "I was surprised -- he told me there were Aiken references, but there's quite a bit of Aiken in here. The main character's girlfriend lives in Aiken, so he comes through town; he's based in Boston, at Boston Suffolk Downs, and he goes to Florida to purchase horses. So far it talks about The Bowery, the Variety, The Saddle Doctor, the Aiken Training Track, Pockets' old sandwich wagon, it talks about the old horse trainers here. It's a very readable racing thriller, and I think there may be more references here that people really into racing will catch that I haven't."
For his part, Morton worked on his historical novel for seven years and did much of the writing as a guest at Hotel Aiken and at the residence of Aikenites Henry and Lisa Cato. The book was released in 2007 by Sheridan County Historical Press, and Morton was in town for the 2007 Fall Steeplechase.
"They're in town this weekend for the Steeplechase and so is everybody else, and we wanted to do it now because of its pertinence to the Triple Crown," Ferguson said.
