It's almost time for North and South to meet on the battlefield once again.
The 2008 Battle of Aiken re-enactment is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the field off Powell Pond Road, Highway 19. The battle site will open to Aiken County school field trips on Friday, and the Battle opens to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Programs, tours and seminars take place throughout the day, and the Battle re-enactment begins at 2 p.m. each day.
A 19th-century church service will be held at the re-enactment site at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Barbecue by Maurice's of Columbia will be available at 11 a.m. each day. The event will also feature performances by period band Unreconstructed.
Spectators are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, umbrellas and video cameras. The re-enactment will feature 1,000 soldiers, 100 cavalry and 20 cannons in the restaging of the 1865 battle and Sherman's March. At the campsite, re-enactors will demonstrate period handcrafts, ironworking, blacksmithing and musical skills, as well as demonstrate cannon firings, period hospital techniques, cavalry tactics, infantry drill, the evolution of the musket and more.
The event is sponsored by the Barnard E. Bee Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp No. 1575.
